Well, a lot has happened since my last post. Maggie has been a very low-key dog since we first found her. She was malnourished, had heart worms, and had given birth to nine puppies in 103 degree weather, so that was to be expected. Then, last week, she threw up a little and had some diarrhea. Also, the puppies were getting their teeth in and had made her nipples bleed a time or two, so she started spending less and less time with them. We could tell she still wanted to take care of the puppies because she would go into their play area and clean them, but after nursing for a minute or two, she would just get up, shake the puppies off, and leave. A few times she even growled at the puppies. She just wasn't feeling up to taking care of them anymore.
The puppies were between 4-5 weeks old, so we began to contact their new families to come get them. We also started a Facebook group called P.O.M.P. (Parents Of Maggie's Puppies) so that all of the new families could post pictures and share their experiences with the puppies. Several of the puppies are in situations where they can play regularly with at least one other sibling, too, so they're all doing great so far.
Because of her diarrhea, the vet gave us some antibiotic for Maggie as the puppies began to go to their new homes. We also scheduled an appointment for her first heart worm treatment, for her sake, but unfortunately the vet decided Maggie was not yet healthy enough for that. She needs to gain at least ten pounds before the vet will begin her heart worm treatment, so hopefully those nasty worms won't get too bad for her before we can get her treatment started.
Now, shortly after the puppies started going to their homes, Maggie quit eating or drinking much. At first we thought maybe she was just sad or something, but after two days we took her back to the vet. It seemed as if she might have dehydrated herself with the diarrhea and, as a result, became constipated. A few x-rays at the vet provided confirmation, so we're now giving her a prescription laxative and trying to encourage her to drink as much as possible. Still, though, she doesn't leave her crate very often, and when she does, it's just to lay in her bed for awhile before returning to her crate. Once in awhile she'll come out and want to be petted like she used to, but not very often.
With everything Maggie has had to deal with, we decided she could probably use a companion. We had talked before about getting a cat if we decided to keep her, so we talked to the vet about it. The vet thought that a cat would be a good companion for her, adding that another dog would probably be too much for her with her timid personality. Joy is allergic to many cats, though, so we needed to find a hypoallergenic breed. So, we went online and found a few feline candidates at some local shelters. We'll start visiting them next week, so it looks like (if all goes well) we may come out of this with a dog and a cat.
Also, today, we are babsitting one of the puppies, Jake. Maggie and Jake were happy to see each other again, but Maggie once again grew tired of him after a minute or so and went to her crate, leaving me to play with Jake until he went to sleep (not that I minded, he's so cute and they're growing soo fast!). I took a few more pictures while playing with him, so I'll leave you with one of those.
If we decide to get a cat, I'll post cat pictures soon. Then We'll probably try to find something else to post about, because I think people are getting tired of dog updates. :) (assuming anyone is even still reading our blog now that it's gone to the dogs). ;)
'Til Next Time,
-Joey
